Who are the big 5 agencies?

The term 'Big 5 agencies' in advertising refers to the five largest global holding companies: WPP, Omnicom Group, Publicis Groupe, Interpublic Group (IPG), and Dentsu. Between them, these conglomerates own hundreds of agency brands and manage some of the biggest marketing budgets on the planet.

WPP, headquartered in London, owns Ogilvy, Grey, VMLY&R, and Wunderman Thompson. Omnicom, based in New York, owns BBDO, DDB, TBWA, and OMD. Publicis Groupe, out of France, houses Saatchi & Saatchi, Leo Burnett, and Starcom. Interpublic Group owns McCann Worldgroup, FCB, and MullenLowe. Dentsu, originally Japanese, operates Dentsu Creative, Merkle, and iProspect worldwide.

That said, the Big 5 are built for enterprise clients with long timelines and complex approval chains. They're genuinely not a great fit for most DTC brands. A founder trying to iterate on ad creative weekly, test three product launches in a quarter, or figure out why their Shopify conversion rate dropped doesn't need a 200-person agency team. They need someone who's done exactly that before.

Specialized DTC brand design agencies are leaner and faster, and they actually understand the environment: Meta and TikTok creative, subscription models, Shopify ecosystems, the visual language that makes someone stop scrolling. That's a pretty specific skill set, and the big holding companies rarely prioritize it.

Some independent agencies that have built real reputations in this space include Gin Lane (now Pattern Brands), Red Antler, Mythology, Cato Brand Partners, and Elsewhen. These firms have launched and scaled some of the better-known DTC brands of the past decade, and their work shows it.
