How do I choose the right Shopify Plus design agency for my brand?

Picking the right Shopify Plus design agency is genuinely one of those decisions that can make or break an enterprise ecommerce project. A good agency will get your business goals, your customers, and your technical constraints. A bad one will deliver something pretty that doesn't work. Here's how to tell the difference.

Start by confirming the agency holds official Shopify Plus Partner status. This isn't just a badge. It means Shopify has verified their technical skills and client track record, and it gives them access to enterprise-level tools and support you'll probably need.

Then dig into their portfolio. Don't just glance at screenshots. Look for Shopify Plus work that's actually relevant to your business model. An agency that's built a dozen fashion storefronts may have no idea how to handle B2B wholesale or subscription commerce. Find case studies with real numbers attached.

Pay close attention to how they run discovery. The agencies worth hiring spend serious time before anyone opens a design file. Audience research, competitor analysis, UX audits. If an agency is ready to start designing in week one without understanding your brand or customers, that's a problem.

On the technical side, ask directly about their depth with Liquid, JavaScript frameworks, Shopify's APIs, and Checkout Extensibility. If you're considering headless, ask whether they've actually shipped a Hydrogen build or are just listing it on their website. There's a difference.

Don't underestimate fit. Enterprise projects run for months, sometimes longer, and you'll be in close contact the whole time. Ask for references and specifically ask how the agency handled something that went wrong. Every project has a moment like that. What matters is how they responded.

Finally, ask for itemized proposals. Comparing line by line tells you more than a total number. The cheapest option almost always costs more in the end through revisions, delays, and rebuilds. That said, expensive doesn't automatically mean better. You're looking for value, not just a price tag.
