What is the difference between a design retainer and a design subscription?

The difference between a design retainer and a design subscription comes down to structure, flexibility, and what kind of working relationship you actually want.
A design retainer is a contract-based arrangement where you pay a recurring monthly fee to reserve a designer's or agency's time. It's personal. The designer learns your brand, joins strategy calls, and often has a say in creative direction. Pricing is negotiated based on your specific volume and complexity, so no two retainers look the same.
A design subscription works differently. You pay a flat monthly rate, submit requests through a task management tool, and get work back within an agreed turnaround. The process is standardized and usually handled by a team rather than one dedicated person. Most subscriptions are month-to-month and can be paused or canceled, which gives you a lot more room to adjust as your needs change.
Here's where they diverge in practice:
Subscriptions tend to work well for startups, e-commerce brands, and marketing teams that need a steady flow of assets at a predictable cost. Retainers make more sense for companies that want a strategic creative partner involved in bigger, more complex work.
