What is the 80 20 rule in UX design?

The 80/20 rule in UX design, borrowed from the Pareto Principle, holds that roughly 80% of users will use only 20% of a product's features. For designers, this means stop trying to polish everything equally. Focus on what most people actually do, and make that part work really well.
In practice, this means using data, usability testing, and behavioral analytics to figure out which features and pathways your majority of users rely on. Then put most of your effort there. The other 20% of use cases still matter, but they shouldn't be allowed to complicate the experience for everyone else.
A mobile banking app is the clearest example. Most users open it to check their balance or move money. Those two tasks should be fast, obvious, and nearly effortless. The budgeting tools and investment trackers can exist, but they shouldn't get in the way just because the team spent equal time on them.
The rule applies directly to design-as-a-service work. When a design team is running on subscription timelines with ongoing deliverable cycles, you can't afford to spread effort evenly across every screen and edge case. You identify which user flows generate the most value, go there first, and iterate. It's how teams show measurable progress quickly instead of getting lost in low-traffic corners of a product.
It also shapes content decisions. Most users will read about 20% of the text on any given page, which is why good UX writing front-loads the critical information. Headlines, bullet points, and visual hierarchy exist to serve the person who is skimming, because that person is almost everyone.
The real critique worth taking seriously is that leaning too hard on the 80/20 rule can mean quietly ignoring accessibility and edge-case users. Those users aren't less important; they just represent smaller numbers. A honest application of the principle means using it to direct effort and sequencing, not as a reason to skip inclusive design. The goal is to serve the majority well without making the product hostile to everyone else.
