What is CRO optimisation?

CRO optimization is the structured process of increasing the percentage of website visitors who complete a specific action, like signing up, booking a demo, or buying, without spending more on traffic. It works by identifying where visitors drop off, forming a hypothesis about why, testing a change, and measuring the result.

Most teams treat CRO optimization as a checklist: add a sticky CTA, shorten the form, swap the button color. That's where the money gets wasted. The real problem is almost always positioning and clarity, not button color. We ran a CRO audit for a Series-B infrastructure SaaS last year whose homepage bounce rate sat at 74%. The fix wasn't a new CTA. It was rewriting the hero headline to name the buyer's actual job title and the specific pain that buyer felt every Monday morning. Bounce dropped to 51% in three weeks, and we never touched the ad budget.

The four-phase framework

Diagnose: pull session recordings, heatmaps, and funnel drop-off data to find the exact step where visitors leave. Hypothesize: write one clear statement about why they leave at that point, grounded in evidence, not gut feel. Test: change one variable per test and run it until you hit statistical significance, which usually means at least 100 conversions per variant. Institutionalize: document what worked and build it into the design system so the learning doesn't disappear when the next vendor shows up.

That fourth step is where most CRO programs fall apart. An A/B test proving a shorter form converts better means nothing if the next website rebuild ignores it entirely. The real value compounds only when findings live inside a shared system that covers every buyer touchpoint: homepage, landing pages, demo flow, sales deck. Buyers who hit a fragmented experience, where the website says one thing and the sales deck tells another story, lose trust before they book anything.

One number worth holding onto: B2B SaaS sites consistently convert at 2-5% from organic traffic. If you're below 2%, the problem is almost certainly messaging before it's anything technical. If you're already at 4-5% and want to push higher, then layout, load speed, and form friction become the levers worth pulling.

Execution without a connecting strategy compounds nothing. That's especially true in CRO, where teams can run 40 A/B tests across a year and end up with the same overall conversion rate they had in January. The individual tests were real. The strategy tying them together wasn't there.

There's also a people problem nobody talks about: CRO findings are fragile. They live in someone's Notion doc or a Slack thread from eight months ago, and then that person leaves. You're back to guessing. Building findings into your design system isn't busywork. It's how you stop relearning the same lessons every 18 months.

If you want to understand how CRO optimization fits inside a broader effort to make every page work harder, the pillar on landing page optimization covers the structural decisions that come before any test. For a practical starting point on your own site, book a 20-min intro and we'll tell you in the first call whether your conversion problem is a messaging problem, a layout problem, or both.
