What is a typical retainer fee for an interior designer?

This question is about interior design, but it's worth addressing here because retainer pricing works similarly across both fields.

Interior designers typically charge a retainer of $1,000 to $10,000 upfront, depending on the project scope, the designer's experience, and location. Well-known designers working on full-home or commercial projects sometimes require $25,000 or more before starting.

Ecommerce design retainers follow the same basic logic, just with different deliverables. Most run $500 to $5,000+ per month, depending on how much work is involved, which platform you're on (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, etc.), and whether you're hiring a solo designer or an agency.

For small to mid-sized ecommerce businesses, $1,000 to $2,500 per month is a reasonable ballpark. That usually covers banner creation, landing page updates, email template design, and minor UX fixes. Larger brands tend to spend $3,000 to $8,000+ per month.

The real case for a retainer isn't just buying hours. A designer who's been inside your brand for six months doesn't need to be briefed on your fonts, your tone, or why you never use that shade of orange. That context saves time and tends to produce better work. Less back-and-forth, fewer revisions, no onboarding a new contractor every quarter.
