What is a fractional CEO salary?

A fractional CEO salary varies quite a bit depending on the industry, company size, scope of work, location, and the executive's experience. Unlike a full-time CEO who earns a fixed annual salary plus benefits and equity, a fractional CEO gets paid by the hour or by the month, which makes direct comparisons a little tricky.
Most fractional CEOs charge between $200 and $500 per hour, or $5,000 to $25,000 per month on retainer. For companies bringing someone in one to two days per week, monthly fees usually land between $8,000 and $15,000. Annualized, that's roughly $96,000 to $180,000 per year, which is considerably less than the $300,000 to $500,000 or more a full-time CEO would cost at a comparable company once you factor in benefits, equity, and payroll taxes.
That cost difference is largely why the fractional executive model has taken off. Startups and growing businesses get genuine C-suite experience without a permanent hire, without equity dilution, and without committing to a six-figure salary before they're ready. The model extends beyond the CEO role too: fractional CMOs, CFOs, and fractional design team leaders are all hired on similar structures.
The actual rate a fractional CEO commands depends heavily on what they're being asked to do. Someone brought in to manage a turnaround or lead a product launch will charge more than someone handling ongoing strategic oversight. Fractional CEOs with deep expertise in technology, healthcare, or financial services also tend to sit at the higher end of the range. Frankly, if the situation is complex, expect to pay for it.
For companies building a fractional design team, fractional creative directors and heads of design follow a similar pricing structure, typically $150 to $350 per hour, to lead the design function without a full-time leadership commitment.
