What is a CRO tool?

A CRO tool is software that helps you measure, test, and improve the percentage of visitors who take a target action on a page. The category splits into three types: analytics and heatmap tools that tell you what's happening, A/B testing platforms that let you run controlled experiments, and session recording tools that show you how individual visitors behave before they leave.

Want a site that converts better? You can build one fast in Framer (View more here).

The three categories do different jobs. Analytics and heatmap tools like Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, and FullStory show you where users click, how far they scroll, and where they drop off. They're diagnostic, not prescriptive. A/B testing platforms like VWO, Optimizely, and Convert let you run controlled variants and measure which version produces more conversions at statistical significance. Session recording tools, including Hotjar, FullStory, and PostHog for product-led SaaS, let you watch real sessions and catch friction points no heatmap would surface: a form field that resets on mobile, a CTA hidden below the fold on certain screen sizes.

The mistake I see most often is teams buying a CRO tool before they have a hypothesis. They install Hotjar, watch 200 sessions, feel like they're doing conversion rate optimisation, and then do nothing with the data because they never defined what they were looking for. A tool is only as useful as the question you bring to it.

A practical stack by traffic volume

For growth-stage SaaS companies, the practical stack works like this. Start with Microsoft Clarity (free) or Hotjar Observe (from around €39 per month) for heatmaps and session recordings. Once you have three to five clear hypotheses from that data, add a testing platform. VWO starts around $199 per month and includes both A/B testing and heatmaps. Optimizely is enterprise-priced, typically $50,000 or more annually, and only makes sense once you have enough traffic to reach statistical significance quickly, usually 50,000 or more monthly sessions. For companies running on Webflow, Convert ($699 per month on the Growth plan) integrates cleanly without requiring a developer every time you want to test a variant.

The tradeoff no one mentions: every A/B test tool adds JavaScript to your page load, which affects your Core Web Vitals score. Optimizely's synchronous snippet can add 200 to 400ms to your Largest Contentful Paint if implemented carelessly. That load-time penalty can hurt organic rankings and simultaneously reduce conversion for users who bounce before the test variant loads. The fix is asynchronous implementation and careful QA, which requires a developer, not just a tool subscription.

For a Series-B SaaS we worked with on a Webflow build, we ran CRO experiments using Convert alongside PostHog for product behaviour data. The winning insight came not from an A/B test but from a PostHog session replay: 34% of demo-page visitors were clicking a non-clickable logo thinking it was a video play button. No heatmap would have surfaced that because the click registered as a dead click rather than a scroll-stop. Sometimes the most useful data is the kind you weren't planning to find.

A CRO tool stack should cost you between €40 and €700 per month depending on traffic volume and test frequency. Budget less than that and you're probably working with incomplete data. Budget more without the hypotheses and team capacity to run experiments, and you're paying for software that collects data no one acts on.

Start with session recordings. Watch 50 sessions on your highest-traffic page. Write down three things that surprised you. Those are your first CRO hypotheses, and they're worth more than any dashboard. For the full guide, read our what is conversion rate optimisation overview.
