Is $500 too much for a logo design?

Whether $500 is too much for a logo design depends on what you're getting for that price and where your business actually is right now. Within the broader range of brand identity design costs, $500 sits on the lower-to-mid end of professional pricing. It can be money well spent, or it can be a waste, depending entirely on the source.

At that price, you can usually expect a competent freelance designer with some experience, often found through platforms like 99designs, Dribbble, or freelancer marketplaces. But it's worth being clear-eyed about what $500 typically buys. You'll likely get one to three initial concepts, a limited number of revision rounds, and final files in PNG, JPG, and sometimes SVG or AI formats. What you won't get is brand strategy, competitive research, multiple style directions, full brand guidelines, or a complete suite of identity assets.

For a startup, solopreneur, or small local business in its early days, $500 is a reasonable investment in professional logo design, especially compared to free DIY tools. A logo built in Canva or something similar rarely produces something ownable, legally protectable, or built to scale.

If your business is growing fast, seeking investment, or launching into a competitive market where looking different from everyone else actually matters, $500 is probably too low. The real risk is ending up with a logo that lacks originality or strategic grounding, and then paying to rebrand 18 months later anyway.

That's the thing about brand identity design costs that people tend to underestimate: spending $500 on a logo you replace in a year and a half is more expensive in the long run than paying $2,500 to $5,000 upfront for a designer who does proper discovery work and builds something that actually lasts.

So no, $500 isn't inherently too much for a logo. But you need to be honest about what that budget realistically delivers. Look hard at the designer's portfolio and nail down every deliverable before you hand over any money.
