How much does ongoing ecommerce design support cost?

The cost of ongoing ecommerce design support depends on who you hire, what you need, and how you structure the engagement. Here's what you can realistically expect to pay.

Freelance designers on retainer typically charge $50 to $150 per hour, or $500 to $3,000 per month for a fixed block of hours. This works fine for smaller stores with straightforward, predictable needs. Just know that availability can be inconsistent.

Design agencies charge more. Monthly retainers usually run $2,000 to $8,000, and for that you generally get a dedicated account manager, faster turnaround, and access to designers with different specialties. It's a bigger commitment, but the structure tends to be more reliable.

Subscription-based design services have gotten popular over the last few years, and honestly it's easy to see why. Flat-rate platforms typically cost $1,000 to $4,500 per month and work on a queue system: you submit requests, they come back completed within one or two business days. It's predictable, which a lot of businesses genuinely appreciate.

Hiring in-house is the priciest route. A senior ecommerce designer in the US earns $75,000 to $120,000 per year in base salary alone. Add benefits and you're looking at $90,000 to $150,000 or more annually. That only makes sense if you have enough consistent work to keep someone busy full-time. Most businesses at the mid-market level don't.

When comparing options, price shouldn't be the only factor. Turnaround time matters. So does whether the designer actually understands conversion, not just aesthetics. A cheap option that produces generic work isn't saving you anything if it doesn't move the needle.

The honest take: ongoing design support tends to pay for itself when it's done well. Better product pages convert better. A more coherent brand builds trust. Those aren't soft benefits, they show up in revenue. The question isn't really whether to invest in it, but which model fits how your business actually operates.
