How much does it cost to start a web design agency?

Starting a web design agency means spending money before you make any. Costs vary a lot depending on your location, team size, and how you plan to operate, so it's worth mapping this out before you commit.

Business registration (LLC or corporation) runs $50 to $500 depending on your state. Your own agency website will cost $500 to $5,000 if you build it yourself, more if you hire out.

Software adds up fast. Adobe Creative Cloud is $55/month, project management tools like Asana or Notion run $10 to $30/month per user, and you'll need hosting and development environments on top of that. Budget $200 to $600/month for a basic software stack.

Don't cheap out on hardware. If you're doing serious design or video work, a capable workstation costs $1,500 to $4,000. A slow machine is a productivity tax you pay every single day.

Branding and marketing require $500 to $3,000 upfront for a logo, portfolio site, and initial campaigns. Paid ads and SEO are ongoing from there, so factor those into your monthly burn rate.

Legal and accounting aren't optional. Client contracts, service agreements, and NDAs protect you when things go sideways, and they will at some point. A lawyer can draft these for $500 to $2,000. QuickBooks runs about $30/month for basic accounting.

Realistically, a solo freelancer moving into agency mode can launch for $3,000 to $10,000 if they're scrappy about it. A team-based operation with proper tooling, branding, and legal groundwork is looking at $20,000 to $50,000 before landing a single client. Neither number is scary if you plan for it. It's the people who don't plan who run out of runway.
