How much does it cost to hire a design systems agency?

What you'll pay a design systems agency depends on a few things: how big your organization is, how complex your product ecosystem is, and whether you need design-only work, coded components, or both.

For a foundational engagement, think discovery, a Figma component library, basic documentation, and a coded component library, most agencies charge between $50,000 and $150,000. That range tends to fit mid-market companies with a reasonably complex product interface.

Enterprise work is a different story. If you're dealing with multiple product lines, multi-brand theming, several frameworks, serious accessibility requirements, or organizational change management, expect to pay $200,000 to $500,000 or more. These projects usually run six to twelve months, and honestly, they should. That kind of scope takes time to do right.

Startups and smaller companies have options too. Some agencies offer scoped packages starting around $15,000 to $40,000, which are typically time-boxed with a tighter deliverable set. You won't get everything, but you can get something solid to build from.

Beyond the initial build, many agencies offer monthly retainers for ongoing maintenance, governance, and evolution. Those range from $5,000 to $25,000 per month depending on how involved you need them to be.

If an agency bills hourly, expect to pay $150 to $300 per hour in the US and Western Europe. Design systems work is specialized, and the rates reflect that.

One thing worth factoring in when you're staring at those numbers: a well-built design system typically saves engineering teams hundreds of hours per quarter, compresses QA cycles, and makes future product development cheaper. The upfront cost is real, but so is what you get back.
