How much does a UI/UX design agency for startups typically cost?

What you'll pay a UI/UX design agency as a startup depends on where the agency is, how experienced they are, how you engage them, and how complex your product is. The range is genuinely wide, so knowing the rough numbers before you start talking to agencies saves a lot of time.

For project-based work, expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $150,000. A basic MVP, wireframes, visual design, and a clickable prototype, usually lands between $10,000 and $40,000. If you need research, a design system, and multiple user flows built out, that climbs to $50,000 or higher, especially with agencies based in North America or Western Europe.

Hourly rates are common too. Smaller boutique agencies tend to charge $75 to $150 per hour. Mid-market agencies run $150 to $250. If you're looking at well-known agencies with a strong startup track record, $250 to $400 per hour is normal.

Retainer models have become popular with startups that need design help on an ongoing basis rather than a one-off project. A dedicated designer or small team on retainer typically costs $8,000 to $25,000 per month. If you're post-launch and iterating fast, this often makes more sense than kicking off a new project every few weeks.

Geography matters more than most founders realize. Agencies in Eastern Europe, Latin America, or Southeast Asia generally charge 30% to 60% less than US or UK agencies for comparable quality. A project that costs $40,000 with a US agency might run $15,000 to $20,000 with a strong agency in Poland or Colombia.

Also watch for costs that don't show up in the initial quote: extra revision rounds, additional research sprints, and handoff documentation can add up. Ask for itemized proposals, look at their portfolio for work on products similar to yours, and get clear on revision policies before you sign anything.

For pre-seed and seed stage startups still figuring out product direction, a good agency is usually cheaper than hiring full-time designers before you know what you're building.
