The cost of working with a design retainer agency varies quite a bit depending on where the agency is based, how big their team is, what's included, and how many hours you're committing to each month. Here's a rough breakdown of what to expect at each level.

At the low end, small or boutique agencies typically start around $1,500 to $3,000 per month. You're usually buying 10 to 20 hours of work, which covers lighter needs like social media graphics or occasional website tweaks. Fine for some businesses, limiting for others.

Mid-tier agencies generally run $3,000 to $8,000 per month and give you access to 20 to 50 hours of work from a broader team. At this level you can expect more serious output: brand system work, UI/UX design, multi-channel campaigns. This is where most growing companies land.

At the premium end, agencies with dedicated creative directors, UX strategists, and full creative teams charge $10,000 to $25,000 or more per month. Funded startups, large marketing departments, and enterprise brands tend to need this level, mostly because the volume and complexity of output demands it.

Some agencies price by the hour, others by deliverable, offering a fixed number of assets per month regardless of time spent. Neither model is inherently better. It depends on how predictable your workload is and how much you trust the agency to manage their own time.

One thing worth thinking through: the monthly fee isn't the whole picture. A retainer arrangement removes recruiting costs, onboarding, benefits, and software licenses from your plate entirely. Hiring even one full-time senior designer can run $80,000 to $150,000 per year before you factor any of that in. For companies that don't need a full internal team yet, a retainer often makes straightforward financial sense.
