How do you choose a top UI/UX design agency for your business?

Picking a UI/UX design agency takes more than scrolling through a nice portfolio. You need one that actually fits your industry, your budget, and where you want your product to go.
Start by getting clear on what you need. Are you building something from scratch, fixing something broken, or looking for ongoing support? A specific project brief will save you hours of back-and-forth with agencies that aren't the right fit.
Then dig into their portfolio properly. Any decent agency will show you the problem they were solving, how they researched it, why they made the design calls they did, and what actually changed as a result. If a case study is just screenshots with no context, that's a red flag.
Ask about their process. Good agencies follow a real methodology: discovery, research, wireframing, prototyping, testing, iteration. If they can't explain their process clearly, they probably don't have one.
Find out who's actually working on your project. There's a big difference between a senior designer and a junior one running point while a director occasionally checks in. Ask directly, and expect a direct answer.
Look them up on Clutch or G2, then go further and ask for references you can call. Reviews online are useful, but a five-minute conversation with a past client will tell you more about how they handle deadlines and hard feedback than any testimonial.
Pay attention to how they communicate from the very first interaction. If they're slow to respond or vague during the sales process, that won't improve once you've signed a contract.
Finally, compare pricing carefully. Cheaper isn't always cheaper. A well-matched agency tends to pay for itself through better retention, fewer redesigns, and a product people actually want to use. The wrong one costs you twice.
