How do I choose the right white label design agency for my business?

Picking the right white label design agency matters more than most agencies admit. Get it wrong and you're the one apologizing to clients.
Start with the portfolio. You want consistency across projects, not just two or three impressive pieces surrounded by mediocre work. Look for variety in industries and design styles. If everything looks the same, that's a red flag.
Test their communication early. Send an inquiry and see how long they take to respond. Ask a slightly complicated question and see if they actually answer it. Poor communication kills white label partnerships faster than bad design does. A discovery call or small trial project will tell you more than any sales page.
Ask hard questions about capacity. How many projects are they running right now? What happens when you need to scale up fast? An agency that sounds great at normal volume can fall apart when you land a big client. Get real answers, not reassuring ones.
Do the math on pricing. Their wholesale rate needs to leave you with a real margin after your time, overhead, and client management. If the numbers barely work, they won't work at all when something goes wrong. Suspiciously cheap agencies are usually cheap for a reason.
Read third-party reviews. Testimonials on an agency's own website are nearly useless. Check Clutch or Google reviews from other agencies who've actually partnered with them. Look for patterns in the complaints, not just the praise.
Get the legal stuff in writing. They should sign an NDA without hesitation and spell out exactly how intellectual property transfers to your clients. If they're vague or resistant here, walk away.
Run a paid trial project before committing. Commission something small and real. Watch how they handle the brief, manage revisions, and hit the deadline. No amount of good reviews replaces seeing how an agency actually behaves when they're doing your work.
